The close connection between the Jewish nation and the diamond & precious gems trade is no secret. As a nomadic nation that was often required to bundle all its possessions into a small space, precious gems were a smart solution. To this day, the word of the Jewish scholar, Maimonides ‘MAZAL’ is used to close diamond deals between merchants of all nations and religions around the world. The Bible mentions precious gems in all sorts of Jewish contexts. The prophets of the Bible mention precious stones in the context of redemption and the Holy Land of Israel.
Despite the Jewish and Holy Land connection to precious gems – no one in documented history has ever thought of mining for precious gems in the Land of Israel, especially in light of the geological information that was known about the area.
That is until 1999, when the HOLYGEMS™ incredible story began, culminated in the discovery of the first-ever economic deposit of precious gems in Holy-Land of Israel.

Each of the 12 ancient tribes of Israel received a blessing concerning their portion of the land and their future. The tribe of Zebulun received the strip of land between the Galilee Sea and the Mediterranean, which is for the most part the area that’s referred to today as the Zebulun Valley. It’s situated at the bottom of Mt. Carmel and the city of Haifa. The virtues of this part of the land are described in the blessing that Moses gives to the tribe of Zebulun:
“And to Zebulun he said: "Rejoice, Zebulun, in your departure, and Issachar, in your tents... For they will be nourished by the abundance of the seas, and by the treasures hidden in the sand” (Deuteronomy 33:18-19).
In 1988, the Lubavitcher Rabbe (one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the 20th century), spoke prophetically and said wondrous things:
“...The uniqueness of Haifa is, that it has a sea and it has a valley - and in the valley are precious stones and gems. The Holy One, Blessed Be He, did a wondrous thing; he concealed them in the depths of the earth...”.
It was Mr. Avi Taub, an Orthodox Jew, a follower of the Rebbe, and a diamond dealer who heard the Rebbe's words and decided to act on them based on faith alone. Against all odds and despite skepticism from scientists, Mr. Taub’s unwavering faith led to the first ever discovery of a remarkable gem deposit in the land of Israel, in the biblical area of Zebulun tribe.
